Ouma's Lasagne

I think that everyone has a fond memory of some sort of treat at Grandma's house, and, in our family, Ouma's Lasagne is no exception. If Ouma really wanted to treat us, she would make two of her delicious lasagnes - one for the visit, and another to take home. It is absolutely awesome!

Ingredients

Pasta or noodles (however much your family will eat)

1/2 teaspoon butter

1 teaspoon salt

1 packet of beef mince

1/2 tablespoon garlic flakes (optional)

1 onion

3-4 tablespoons chutney

3-4 tablespoons tomato sauce/pasata

Salt and pepper to taste

1/2 teaspoon curry powder (optional)

2 cups milk

3 tablespoons flour

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon cumin (optional)

1 cup grated cheese

Instructions

First, get the noodles cooked. Boil some water, then add the noodles, 1 teaspoon salt, and the 1/2 teaspoon butter and cook.

While the noodles are cooking, start on the mince. Prepare a pan with some olive oil (or coconut oil, if you prefer), and brown the onion. Once the onion is ready, add the mince to the mixture. Once the mince meat is nice and brown, you can add the salt, pepper, garlic, chutney, cumin, and whatever spices you like. Stir in the spices and let it cook for a few more minutes.

Now, add in the chutney and tomato sauce. If the mince is dry, add a little bit of water, turn down the heat, and let simmer for a few minutes.

While the mince is simmering, start with the white sauce. You can either do this on the stove or in the microwave. We have given the instructions for the microwave method, but you can do this on the stove as well.

Firstly, put the two cups of milk into the microwave for about two minutes. Take it out of the microwave and whisk in the 3 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons butter, and salt and pepper to taste. Return in to the microwave for another two minutes, then take out and give it another whisk. Repeat this step until the sauce is nice and thick. Once your sauce has reached the desired consistency, add half a cup of grated cheese to it and stir thoroughly.

Prepare an oven safe dish, and put half of the noodles into it, spreading them out evenly. Then, evenly pour the mince mixture on top. Put the other half of the noodles on top of the mince, and then pour the white sauce evenly over. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.

Put your lasagne into the oven until the cheese has browned on the top.

Serve and enjoy!
